Now here’s a pleasant surprise coming from Toronto native Matt Chan aka Steely Chan: Left Of The Golden Era is an eight-track EP/mixtape mashing the sounds of Dutch funk band Lefties Soul Connection with some golden era rap cuts that blend very organically with the Hammond organ-powered tunes of the Lefties. I’ve been a fan of them ever since I first heard their cover of DJ Shadow’s ‘Organ Donor‘ from their album Hutspot back in 2006. This is exactly one of those ideas so simple and organically sounding you can’t belive nobody did it earlier. Besides, I’m a sucker for Hammond organs so it pretty much had me at the first couple bars.

The new Lefties Soul Connection album One Punch Pete is out now and you can keep up with Steely Chan on their (plural, according to the text there) website or souncloud page. The new video to the Lefties tune ‘You Don’t Know’ is below.

Whenever he has time to spare from those efforts he writes (about music, mostly), hosts a radio show and designs graphics for a living. He lives in The Netherlands where he continues to be winning.
