Axe Cop is a webcomic (and print comic, published by Dark Horse) written by two brothers: Ethan and Malachi Nicolle. What makes it extraordinary is that at the time they started it, artist Ethan was 29 while writer Malachi was 5 years old. To understand the brilliance of that, think back to the awesome no-holds-barred and anything-resembling-logic-defying stories you made when playing with your friends at that age. Now imagine you have an older brother who’s a kick-ass cartoonist meticulously recreating those stories as comic book pages. This is the world of Axe Cop.

Axe Cop once found the perfect fireman axe. So he picked up to kill bad guys with. He works with his brother Flute Cop, who has been transformed to Dinosaur Cop, Ghost Cop, Avocado Cop, Uni-Avocado Cop and probably some other transformations too. They have a pet T-Rex named Wexter with machine guns for arms. It is beyond awesome.

The unbridled joy and insanity of Axe Cop has gotten me out of a rotten mood on several occasions in the past 3 years. So Fox picking up the rights to an animated cartoon adaptation was music to my ears. It’s supposed to be part of their ADHD programming, a late night block of cartoons that ostensibly aims to become competition for Adult Swim. While the rest of their ideas is unknown for now, this Halloween preview shows that at least the Axe Cop show will be done with the right people behind it: The casting of Ron Swanson Nick Offerman as Axe Cop is pitch perfect.

If you want more Axe Cop, head on over to Ethan and Malachi’s site to read them for free or pick up any of the three volumes in print.
