Nothing like a lil’ controversy to shake Jay out of his sleepwalk. Dude’s been coasting with nothing left to prove ever since BP3 if you ask me (but then again, why would he, he’ll sooner make another bajillion without my advice than with it). Now that Republicans try to paint his recent trip to Cuba in a sinister light though, he airs a few things out the best way he can: in a verse.
“Obama said, ‘Chill you’re going to get me impeached’ / You don’t need this shit anyway, chill with me on the beach.”
The beat, which (judging by those fairly annoying ad-libs) seems to be produced by Swizz Beats, isn’t extremly eventful, but the subdued guitar-strums and understated keys leave enough room for Jay to spit. And he does so passionately. From the sale of his share in the Brooklyn Nets to his UMG deal and the political fallout over his visit to Cuba, Jay pulls no punches and apparently has no desire to appease his connects (“Politicians never did shit for me / except lie to me, distort history”). He actually sounds invested in what he’s saying rather than spit the sort of detached yacht-rap we’ve grown accustomed to from his recent efforts. It’s not a track that’ll stand out amongst his discography as a spectacular highpoint, but it certainly is a step-up from the shit that was “cray.”
Somebody needs to crap in this guy’s cereal bowl more often. Who knows, it might just coax another great record out of him.
