If you’ve never given a rat’s tail about Fashawn this is a good way to meet him. Many rappers talk about the influence of Illmatic on their craft, but none has shown admiration for the classic album the way Fashawn has done here. He basically took the beats and laced them with original rhymes. The outcome is brilliant.
I came closer to my quest to see a concert by everyone in my Top 10 Tuesday night, after seeing Nas and Damian Marley perform in front of a capacity crowd in Houston.
If you played “Fall in Love” and “American Boy” back to back you wouldn’t know the difference. Go ahead, try humming “Fall in Love” atop the beat of “American Boy” and see if it works. Nas even cribs a line from one Kanye.
Nas and Damian rocked Jimmy Kimmel Live last night with two strong performances from Distant Relatives. I can’t believe that backpacker on About.com gave Distant Relatives a glowing review.
Mos Def got a whiff of Gil Scott-Heron’s “New York Is Killing Me and succumbed to the craze.” Thankfully, he didn’t have to lower the bar to get the job done. Mos dons his Yankee hat and knocks this one right out the park.
After listening to this album more than a few times I have come to the conclusion that this is going to be an important album in the history of music – an album that will be referenced many years from now for its message and for its method of sharing that message.

The first time I heard “Friends,” I was 90% sure Nas was getting at Jay. The second time I heard it, I thought it was a dis to 50. After 709 spins, I’m pretty sure it’s a subliminal to Jay, Fif, AZ, and Mega. Am I reaching here? Well, peep the lyrics and audio below and decide for yourself.
Distant Relatives has gone leaky leaky all over the web. I know you will still cop it on May 18th because you’re all good people who would never bootleg a charity album. Amirite? If that’s a yes, then pop the hood for your EXCLUSIVE Distant Relatives swag bag.
Esco and Junior Gong finally drop a video for their triumphant lead single, “As We Enter.” You already know how I feel about this song. We’ll find out if the rest of Distant Relatives is…
Given Nas’ track record with beats selection, I was skeptical about the production on Distant Relatives. We all know he’s capable of wrecking conventional beats, but I wasn’t sure how he’d fare in Marley territory. “Land of Promise” is Marley territory.
Nas and Damian Marley are taking it back to a time when creative minds cooked up anthems in the basement. It’s neither rap nor reggae. It’s a hybrid of the two with some Mary Jane-inspired chops thrown in. From the early leaks, their upcoming collaborative album sounds like an epic. Watch as the two rave about Distant Relatives.
